Technology has made our lives easier. It made us productive and managed our time and energy wisely.
Furthermore, the invention of smartphones has made other things obsolete. Smartphones have lots of functions that we can use by just tapping on an icon and get the results that we want in an instant.
With the invention of smartphones, a lot of mobile apps are launched every minute. These apps have solved some of our daily concerns, like ordering food, booking a hotel, buying concert tickets, and even looking for a date.
Now, there is an app in Lithuania that is solely created for dogs. It is a sort of “dating” app between a dog and a human. The app matches the dog who needs to be rehomed to its potential owner.
GetPet is a mobile app created as part of the “Hack4Vilnius” Vilnius city Hackathon and launched in January 2019. Tinder, a mobile dating app, inspired it.
Asta Zaiceva Stalmakova, one of the members of the development team, said that it is her dream to create a tool that can help solve the animal welfare issues in Lithuania.
Lithuania is a small country, yet it has plenty of dog-friendly places. You can see a dog paw signage on establishments, meaning pets are allowed inside the establishment. Dogs can travel for free when taking public transportation too.
GetPet app aims to help homeless dogs find a permanent home. Through the app, potential dog owners look at the photo of each dog. Each dog profile has a catchy phrase and a story. If a prospective dog owner likes a dog, swipe right; if not, swipe left.
For the initial roster of dogs on GetPet, the developers collaborated with two pet shelters in Vilnius.
In processing the adoption, it only requires three simple steps: find one another, get to know each other, and, finally, grow together.
Once the interested individual chooses a dog, he/she contacts the animal shelter indicated on the dog’s profile and schedule a date with the dog. The meet-up will determine if it is a “match” between the human and the dog.
If, on the first date, the connection is not there, the person can request a second and third date.
There is no rush in finding a dog that will match the person.
As soon as the person finds the perfect dog for him/her, GetPet will provide all the support needed to facilitate the adoption.
The app has been successful in finding matches between a dog and a human. People in other parts of the world are requesting that the app will also be available in English and their own country.
GetPet developers are continuing to expand the app so that it will reach more dogs and potential dog owners.
